Over the last few weeks and months, I’ve been doing a lot and a little at the same time. A lot of self and internal work and what seems like a little(output) of my actual work, but a lot of spinning my wheels. The last couple of weeks, I’ve been in a place of preparation and anticipation with some life changes I knew were coming and happening. And with these changes, I put pressure on myself to maximize my output and results. And when it seemed like one or both weren’t maximized, I felt crappy — Negative thoughts, doubt, fear and everything that is the opposite of Love crept in and rented space in my head.
I was doing part of what I thought was the work through my daily routine and ramping up affirming myself, meditating, reading and a bunch of other things. But that work was for naught. It was for naught because I previously verbalized different thoughts and messages to myself. So I subconsciously created an uphill battle for myself.
Through conversations, exchanges and fellowships with friends, my chosen family and my constant contact community that have continued to support me in the myriad of ways they do I’ve had gentle and not-so-gentle reminders to be grateful, recognize and be mindful of the time and enjoy the now. Additionally, I took time to reflect back on my body of work throughout my career — The artists and brands I've worked with, projects or work I produced, things I’ve created, creative directed or opportunities created and the impact that I or my work has had. This reflection helped activate Grace with myself in this process and also reminded me of who TF I am.
One day I really woke up and mentally told myself who I am and I realized I needed to say that aloud verbally, so I did. Then I called a few friends and reminded/told them who they were as well. It was empowering to go through and experience this and even more have a reminder to not only shed or block those negative thoughts, doubt, fear and the opposites of Love, but go deeper to move forward now in shedding any resistance or conflicts I’ve had about myself or my work and fully step into and own the abundance of gifts, talents and capabilities I’ve been given.
While “Imposture syndrome” is a thing that people do experience, we know that it’s not something that can be officially diagnosed psychiatrically. Personally, I believe it’s more of a mindset foundationalized in doubt and fear that we sit in after we get triggered by something. This mindset is one that often takes us out of present-moment awareness and our birthright of abundance — A mindset that activates thoughts of lack and scarcity and even temporarily paralyzes us to a state of things are happening to me, when that’s not actually true.
Mindfulness isn’t about sitting on a cushion cross-legged with our eyes closed. It’s a trait of awareness and paying attention that we perpetually cultivate to appreciate what is happening NOW without judgment. It’s a practical tool that can help us stay present in our daily moments and experiences where it offers us the opportunity to use the wisdom and experiences of our past, in the moment no matter how tough or hard, to presently see that everything is actually HAPPENING FOR US instead of to us.
At any moment you can activate Mindfulness or present-moment awareness by:
Bringing yourself into your body fully — feel and fully experience what is happening by recognizing and feeling
the seat you’re on/what’s holding you up,
the ground underneath your feet,
the sensations, tingles and itches you feel,
the things in your environment that you hear, smell or see
Taking a deep breath in through your nose and exhaling fully out of your mouth(repeating this for as many cycles as needed to be present)
By using this awareness as a quick reset, you can then have and use your breath be your tour guide into the presence of each moment
Appreciating and having gratitude for how far you’ve come
No matter where you sit in your conscious and subconscious thoughts, I want to let you know that you are so much more than what you can see or believe. You are more than doubt, fear or negative thoughts.
You are Amazing and your experiences have brought you to where you are here and now.
