Living in a city like New York, you get exposed to a lot on a daily basis in almost any direction or place you look. Some things are comical, some are unfortunate, some are traumatic. Things that aren’t normal or things you wouldn’t see or experience in everyday life get normalized in New York.
But the city is addicting and the vigor of the city is infectious — Everyone is hustling working to make it or fulfill their dreams in one way or another. New York gives so much and the grit of that hustle is something, I believe all New Yorkers collectively share. It’s like we know we’re on similar paths and we respect the paths people are on.
But sometimes you see or experience things in the city that you can’t unsee or un-experience. That happened to me this AM as I was taking the garbage out. I won’t tell you what I saw exactly, but I was prompted to speak up and say something about what I saw — Not be a savior or superhero. But actually, speak up because in certain situations if you don’t speak up about things happening or call people out for poor behavioral choices other people suffer and continue to suffer. Me speaking up was for the betterment of my block and the community within the block, but also the next generation or little ones in the neighborhood.
