Growing up, I remember when I was about twelve years old, my mom telling my sister and me (or maybe just me) that we needed to write down and keep a daily journal of three things we were grateful for.

I don’t recall how or where this came from exactly, but later in catching an episode of Oprah with her, I assumed that’s where she got it from. At that age, I’m embarking on my teenage years where I feel like I’m coming into my own in understanding life and am also feeling like I am one of the coolest kids out here. So, as you can imagine, journaling and writing down what I’m grateful for wasn’t at the top of my list of things to be doing. It was another directive in addition to the vocabulary words my Dad made us do, that I didn’t want to be doing. I was over-consumed with sports, music, developing new interests and living my life. So why in the world would I take a few moments to journal?
