Sending you Good Vibes and Energy of love, peace and ease.
May we honor the land we are on,
May we have gratitude for those who came before us,
As we move forward may we all be safe, happy, healthy, peaceful and at ease!
Wherever you are in the world, wherever you may be sitting, standing or lying down and reading this from, someone struggled, paved or made a way for you to be right where you are doing exactly what you are doing in this moment.
In and on the land you are on someone came before you.
Mindfulness and being mindful is a perpetual practice with a very wide scope — whether we’re sitting, eating, working, walking or creating there are a myriad of ways we can pay attention in the moment and cultivate awareness in the present moment, without judgment. Acknowledging and honoring the land we’re on, the people who came before us and the people that came before us on the land we are on is another way to actively practice being mindful. It also brings us closer to ourselves and our environments.
How do we acknowledge and honor this?
And How does it help with mindfulness?
Great question.
First, we can start by doing a quick look-up to see what land we are on or are occupying. You can do that by typing your current address in the search here (or at the link below)
Second, once we see on the map, what land we are on and gain a better understanding of what people originally inhabited that land and the languages they spoke, we can reflect on the following questions:
How and what do we think about the land that we live on?
What is the history of this territory?
What are the impacts of colonialism on this land and territory?
What is my relationship to this territory?
How did I come to be here?
What do I know about the culture of the land and the people that were originally on it? (ex. events, traditions, etc.)
Lastly, we can think deeply about the people that lived on this land.
What did these people do?
What seeds, literally and figuratively did they plant on this land?
What did they endure on this land?
Can we hold these people in compassion for whatever they endured?
How did the buildings and structures on this land come to be by and from these people?
Who planted the tree of the fruit you’re eating?
Offer Gratitude, — Give thanks to these people that came before us.
Acknowledging, reflecting and going deeper to look at the land from this perspective(an Indigenous perspective) means we understand that the land is a living being; this understanding both gives us insight into and increases our awareness(mindfulness) of how we treat and interact with the land and the people or ancestors that inhabited it.
Today October 9, 2023, is Indigenous People’s Day — A celebration and holiday in the United States that celebrates and honors Indigenous American people, commemorating their history and culture.
We can be mindful of and acknowledge the land and the people that inhabited it
what land beyond this day and without having to sit cross-legged and formally meditate. Just taking a few moments to think about, reflect and acknowledge those who came before us and the land we’re on when we’re running, eating, walking, driving, exercising or more — This is the active practice.
Can you take a proactive approach to honor those who came before you and the land you’re on?
Have an Amazing day, have an Amazing week, have an Amazing month and Be well, stay mindful.
