Compassion in challenging times
Sending you Good Vibes and Energy of love.
May all beings feel held in love right now,
May all beings be free from any pain, suffering or sorrow,
May all beings’ challenges or suffering come to an end,
May all beings find peace.
Everyone in the world experiences and goes through something that someone else doesn’t know about. For whatever reason, whether pride, ego or something else people muster up the courage and continue to endure that challenging experience or suffering. In other cases, there are challenges, situations, and circumstances of suffering that people experience that are magnified or broadcast for the world to see. In the moment the world is experiencing right now, I believe the world not only needs more love, but more compassion.
I previously wrote and shared on Compassion months ago — As a refresher, to be compassionate is wishing that a being or all beings be free from pain; sense from within what it must be like to experience someone else’s experience.
I want to go deeper into Compassion practice and the suffering that we feel and want to alleviate in others by offering Tonglen which is a practice of compassion. Tonglen is a practice of giving or taking or sending and receiving and visualizing someone who is suffering.
In Tonglen our compassion awakens, we connect with the spaciousness and emptiness of our being and are introduced to a far bigger view of reality.
Tonglen can be done as a formal meditation practice or anywhere at any time. For example, Pema Chodron gives an example of when we see someone in pain, we can breathe in that person’s pain and send relief to them.
Practicing Tonglen
- We rest in the spacious awareness of our being and then move to put ourselves in the shoes of another person.
- We move to bring this person to mind,
- We visualize and take in their pain or suffering on the in-breath, and on the out-breath we take in relief, sending feelings of relief.
Additionally, we can offer these phrases with the Tonglen practice:
May your suffering end,
May you be held in/with love,
May you find peace
In a time like now, the world can use more compassion and we can be mindful vessels radiating love through a simple practice of compassion or a deeper, empathetic compassion practice of Tonglen.
