Are we in uncertain times...?
“We’re in uncertain times.”
This is a phrase and set of words I often hear said when life, life’s and unfavorable things happen in the world.
I was in a meeting last week and a discussion in the meeting(non-related to the phrase) made me think about our collective stress, anxiety and suffering. For the last week, I’ve since been sitting with this phrase, working to unpack it. What does it actually mean? and what do I interpret it to mean?
I thought about how we cling so much to control. Where our perception leads us to believe we have or are in control over something, someone, a situation, or a circumstance. But are we really in control?
No, not really.
We all carry a level of hope, optimism and even complacency in relation to life and what we want or expect to unfold. But we really don’t know what can or will happen. Much of our days and lives are anchored on the future, planning. We have an idea or vision, make a plan to go somewhere, see someone or do something, send a calendar invite, and attempt to scope out how we want life to unfold and the way we want things to be. But at any moment, life can happen and we can get a curveball thrown our way — The path we’re on may make a sudden twist or the storied outcome we hope for takes an unexpected turn and the plans we made change. The things we thought we had under our control, we don’t.
Are things and times uncertain? Yes.
But the truth is, every moment is uncertain.
We don’t know what can happen or transpire in each moment. And whether we like it or not, that is the beauty and the challenge of life — moment-to-moment unfolding and happening, in perpetuity.
We really just have each moment, nothing more, nothing less.
Something to reflect on this week:
Knowing each moment is uncertain, how can we better meet these moments?
How can we do better at meeting the uncomfortable and at meeting the things out of our control?
How does knowing we live in perpetual uncertainty change how we have experiences?
How does this change how we view our lives?
Can we relinquish control?
Can we meet each moment fully?
Have an Amazing day.
Be well, stay mindful.
